Bukit Pelindung, Kuantan

Bukit Pelindung is a reserved forest near Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan. It offers several hiking trails which include a tarred jogging track all the way up to the hill top, or two other jungle trekking trails that lead to Teluk Cempedak beach from halfway of the hill. Since we opt for a more adventurous track, and we would really love to see the sea view from the hill, we followed the tarred road until half way, then turned into the woods, which we found two jungle trekking trails.

It was a really quiet day. I was with Mean and her younger brother, standing at the entrance of Bukit Pelindung, amidst the housing area, which is very similar to Bukit Saga and Bukit Gasing at this point. We hiked our way up on the tarred road, while capturing some photos of pretty little flowers along the way. Chatting with Mean and her brother about their experiences on this hill, they told me this was the venue for their school's sport activity- "merentas desa" during secondary school years. Mean told me with grin, on how she was dying, forcing herself to run up this steep hill. This reminded me of my times during National Service, when I was 17 years old. Time really flies, all the teenage dreams, laughter, and fun, were left behind now. Almost 10 years already. Good old days, I supposed.
Mean wanted to show how steep the road was
After half an hour, we reached the halfway of the hill. There was a resting bower and a map board on several trails leading to different destinations. Here, both of us bid goodbye to Mean's brother, since he was rushing home for some chores, while both of us started the jungle trekking.
Everything was good in the beginning, not until I found some white papers writing some scriptures, hanging on the trees along the trail. I tried to ignore those papers, without telling Mean this. Unfortunately, the sky was getting darker, and we heard thunder.

"Is that a thunder?" Mean asked.
"No, keep going." I answered. Yes, I cheated her, I want her to focus on the route, since she would be panicked easily.

"Run, or walk faster, I heard something from the wood." Mean said.
"Don't be nervous, it's normal to hear something in the wood. Fallen leaves, perhaps."

Now, in front of us, two paths to be chosen. The first thing that came up in my mind, the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. It was exactly like the poem:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth
:

:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Feeling undecided, we kept looking up and down. Trying to remember the simplified map that we have seen just now, which was not really useful in this situation.
"Wow, this really looked like the poem that we have learnt in secondary school."
"I remember the poet chose the path that was less traveled by."
"But sorry Robert Frost, we are timid little girls. Let's go with the one with more traveled by."

We walked really fast in the wood, then I tripped and injured my ankle, since I was wearing Mean's shoes and it were slight big for my size. Luckily, the injury was minor. We continued the journey together, to another diverged paths again. This time, we saw a signage "walking trail", pointed to the right path. We followed it, but the path was getting shady, and looked less trampled. Mean started to worry, and she suggested to walk back.
"No, don't worry, I believe it can lead to the way out, since it had signage just now. We can't give up."
"But it looked like a wrong way."
"Let's go a bit further, okay?"

After 15 minutes, we saw sparks of lights through the trees. It was the sea. The trail now led to the stairs, which allowed us to walk down to the beach. Again, we saw some white papers jumbled up on the stair, Mean picked it up and it was the scripture. Frantically, she threw it away. We guess some people went there for prayers, or some accidents may have happened there before.

Of course we did not forget our mission too. A lot of rubbish was seen at the bridge, since it may be a good spot for a rest or picnic. We started to clean the area up before heading home.

Panorama Hill, Sg. Lembing

This time I have followed Mean to her hometown- Kuantan, Pahang. During this trip, we have targeted two famous hills over there, which were Panorama Hill at Sungai Lembing, and Bukit Pelindung near Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan.

Firstly, I would like to introduce this lovely place, Sungai Lembing. This was my third time here. Previously, I have known nothing about it, other than it was a tin mining town during British colonial era, mentioned in the History textbook of my junior high school years. It was not until I first set my legs on this beautiful land, I could hardly believe that there were so many hidden gems in this place. Rainbow waterfall, one of the renowned spots there, is a beautiful tall fall whereby the water disperses down like spray, and results in rainbows. This time I was not going to visit it, but I will show you the photos I have captured in year 2010 when I first visited there.
Next, Panorama Hill, another famous spot there. The hill is famous for the breathtaking sunrise view over the sea of clouds. Trust me, you will never have a chance to see all these incredible views unless you are at Sungai Lembing, at least not in other places in Malaysia that I know of. Again, I have a mixture of old and new photos, since I was late this time, and not able to catch up the view of sea of clouds. We departed at 6am from Kuantan this time, and reached the hill top at 7.45am, after an hour hike.

The hill top was rather clean, I bet the people there really maintain it well and clean it regularly. Hence, not much we can do there, no rubbish to be picked at all. We relaxed ourselves on the top, while viewing the picturesque scenery.

Some old photos back in 2010 when I first visited there
The photos taken this time :) The sea of clouds started to fade, since it was a bit late when we reached the hill top. The ideal time for perfect view would be around 6.30am, and wait patiently for the sunrise

Selfie time again!
After that, we went to the waterfall nearby for a cool splash.
This marked the ending of our Sungai Lembing trip for the day :)

p/s: I reminisced the first time when I hiked this hill, I really hated hiking that time since I was quite sedentary. I nearly gave up on the way up there, as I was embarrassed to have my friends waited me to take a rest. However, this time is different, I could hike up there without a hitch, thanks to all the training during this holiday! I am totally in love with hiking and getting close to the nature now.

Kanching Rainforest Waterfall

To be honest, I am not a waterfall lover because my mom have been telling me scary stories about waterfalls. For example-"Waterfall eats people!". Unfortunately, SuFang and Kin Luoi are very excited when they heard the word "WATERFALL" :-( They described that it is fun to be splashed by the icy water and enjoy the serene forest. They also suggested that we can eat beside the pool while soaking our feet into the water. It sounds interesting and I would like to have a try! Since we have missed Bukit Apek and Saga's waterfall, we went to another famous rainforest waterfall.

Kanching Rainforest Waterfall a.k.a Kanching Recreational Forest, is located in a forest reserve of nearly 500 hectars in the Rawang district just north of Kuala Lumpur. The forest park is a very popular spot for picnics, camping, swimming and jungle tracking, especially during weekends. Yes, I love the idea to have picnic besides the pool!

#2 Like a mini dam!
#3 Trekking trail to higher level of the waterfall
The Rainforest Waterfall is divided into several levels. Level 2 and 3 (102m and 120m respectively) are the most popular spots where people can swim in a clear fresh pools or have picnics. There are picnic gazebos, with changing rooms and toilet. However, we did challenged ourselves by hiking to the Level 4 where the trekking trail become slightly difficult. Once we reached Level 4, we noticed that there are many trashes especially around the pool. Hence, we started to clean the area within a short period of time.
#4 Yuck!!!

#6 Tadaaa~~ "Collection" of the Day

After finished cleaning the areas, we went to level 3 of the waterfall to have our lunch. It is breezing and we did enjoy our food here.

#12 Selfie time
At the end of the day, it does changed my mindset about waterfall. In fact, I enjoy the trip especially when I am with my friends. However, I still think that we should alert when playing in the pool because accident do happen.
